Privacy
This summary explains how we handle your family's information. Have it reviewed by your legal adviser before launch.
Photos
Photos of people are used once, at the moment you upload them, to draw a storybook portrait and to write short appearance notes that help our illustrator. The photo itself is never stored. To change a portrait, you upload a new photo.
Pet photos are kept for 30 days, because they help us draw your pet accurately, and are then deleted automatically.
To draw the portrait, the photo is sent securely to the AI services that write the appearance notes and paint the portrait (Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini). They use it only to do that work for us and do not use it to train their models. Under their own policies they may keep request data for a limited time for safety and abuse monitoring, after which it is deleted. Both offer zero-retention arrangements for business accounts, where nothing is kept after the request; if we move to those arrangements, we'll update this policy.
What we keep
- Your account details: name, email address and sign-in information.
- Your characters: names, relationships, ages, pronouns, appearance notes and the storybook portraits we drew.
- Your books: the story text, translations, illustrations and PDFs.
- Purchases and book credits, and the emails we sent you.
- Your email choices, and when you made them.
Emails we send
We send three kinds of email, and you choose two of them:
- Service emails, always sent because they're part of the service you asked for: confirming your email, resetting your password, telling you a preview or book is ready, receipts, gift notices and printing updates.
- Preview reminders, only if you agree to them when you sign up or on your account page. If a free preview hasn't been unlocked we may send one email a few days after it's ready, which may show a picture from your own preview, and one the day before it ends. We send each one at most once per book.
- News and offers, only if you agree to them: occasional emails about new features, story ideas, festivals and discounts.
We record when you gave or changed your consent. Every reminder and marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and you can change your choices at any time on your account page. Unsubscribing turns off both reminders and news; service emails continue while you have an account.
Emails are sent through our email provider, who processes your email address only to deliver them for us.
Who can see it
Your books and characters are private to your account. Our staff can see them only to help you or to fix a problem with a book.
Services we use
We use trusted providers to write and translate stories, draw illustrations, take payments and send email. They process information only to provide those services to us.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time from your account page. That removes your sign-in, characters, portraits, books and reading data. We keep records of payments where the law requires it.
